Message from the Superintendent

Dear San Diego Unified community,

With clarity of purpose and a deep sense of humility, I am honored to share that President-Elect Joseph Biden has nominated me to be the next United States Deputy Secretary of Education.

I have already spoken with Secretary-designate Miguel Cardona, and I have never been more optimistic about the future of the American education system. I have also spoken with the San Diego Unified Board of Education to ensure a seamless transition, pending my confirmation by the United States Senate. Everyone remains focused on providing our students with a full recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The chance to work with each of you, my colleagues, in the service of our children, has been the honor of my lifetime. I hope you will share in my whole-hearted belief that our critical work will now continue at the national level. The strategies and solutions we created in San Diego will inspire the next generation of educators and students.

In my note to families, I shared excerpts from a poem by Maya Angelou that I have turned to many times during the current crisis for inspiration. It is called, “Continue,” and I encourage you to read the poem with your family today, of all days, as we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you once again for all we have done together, and I know our work will continue.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Cindy Marten

Continue

Into a world which needed you
My wish for you
Is that you continue

Continue

To be who and how you are
To astonish a mean world
With your acts of kindness

Continue
To let your eloquence
Elevate the people to heights
They had only imagined

Continue

To remind the people that
Each is as good as the other
And that no one is beneath
Nor above you

Continue

To dare to love deeply
And risk everything
For the good thing

Continue

And by doing so
You and your work
Will be able to continue
Eternally
